Practicum Hours Requirement for both Syracuse and Texas License

Syracuse University 

Client hours

  • 500 Total
    • 250 Relational

Supervision

  • 100 Total
    • 50 raw hours - video, audio, or live observation
      • (25 audio max)

Hours

  • All hours must be tracked and recorded
  • Hours include: 
    • Face to face client hours
    • Supervision hours
    • In some states: Meetings associated with placement site
    • In some state: Phone/paperwork with client care

Supervisor and Site Requirements

  • Supervisor must be AAMFT Approved Supervisor or Supervisor Candidate or Equivalent
  • Licensed in the state of practice 
  • Site must be approved by the program
  • Sites must be eligible to provide MFT services according to state laws

Client Work and Practicum Class

  • Students must always:
    • Be registered in a practicum course 
    • Maintain student membership through AAMFT (& student liability insurance) in order to be in a placement site and practice MFT as a student intern
  • All hours will be fulfilled through practicum placement sites
  • All hours must be complete in order to be eligible for graduation

Texas Associate License

  • Supervised clinical internship - 12 months or 9 semester hours 
    • 300 hours of experience 
      • 150 of which are direct client contact hours
        • 75 of those 150 hours must be direct client contact hours with couples and families 
  • The board requires a Supervised Clinical Practicum and Experience Verification Form completed by your program for each practicum or internship you completed
